Stroud Camera Club Member Annie Blick, for the whole of May has an exhibition of 16x12 inch prints from the Peckham Archive of old Stroud in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s click here for the Stroud Photos website.

The prints are displayed at The Lockkeepers Cafe & Bar at Wallbridge, Stroud (next to the Canal Trust visitors centre). All profits from print sales will go to local Stroud Charities.

Stroud Camera Club is pleased to announce a change of venue for the new season in September 2012.

We will be moving to the Cotswold Indoor Bowls Club near Sainsbury's in Stroud. The new venue gives us a much larger room, better parking, easier access and most importantly a bar, so tea time can be a quick half if you so choose. The Committee Officers at the C.I.B.C are extremely friendly and we are very much looking forward to sharing our new home with Members and visitors alike from September. More exciting news is that the new venue also presents us with the opportunity to run a more intimate hands-on camera session one Friday a month where you can bring your cameras and get some hands-on help.

Click here for a link to information and directions to the new venue.

Stroud Camera Club is proud to present:

Damien McGIllicuddy

February 23, 2012

Stroud Indoor Bowls Club

Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis so don't leave it too long. Get in touch through our Contact page.

Whatever you have seen of Damien McGIllicuddy’s work, come and be prepared to be inspired on 23rd February at Stroud Indoor Bowls Club from 7.30 -10.00.
If Damien believes in one thing it is raising the standards for all photographers so aside from his rich array of awards, he spends much of his time mentoring aspiring photographers and campaigning for higher standards of education.  Damien is a passionate speaker, an extraordinary talent and one of the most in demand photographers in the UK today.
Damien’s work has been recognised worldwide with 11 UK Awards of Excellence; 59 Fuji Professional Awards; 112 British Professional Photographer Awards; 600+ Regional, National & International Awards.  Damian also became the 68th Master Photographer Fellow in the World, and is currently the ONLY Photographer to have 5 UK Master Photographer of the Year Awards and 7 Society Photographer of the Year Awards
Sometimes referred to as "The BIG Dog", (it's a long story but one he will happily share with whoever wants to hear), he has also been called many other things throughout his career, and some of those are even printable! More often than not in the photographic press he’s referred to as the “Magician” or the “Lighting Wizard”, terms of endearment that best describes his ability to create beautifully lit fashion, beauty and portrait imagery simply anywhere... ...under any circumstance!
A worldwide advocate of “Strobism”, (Minimal Kit - Maximum Effect), Damian is well known for teaming any & all portable lighting with his own, personally designed Damian McGillicuddy Lighting Modifiers. These are a range of collapsible, highly portable light modifiers & light shaping tools designed by the man himself!
Damien will be flying in from an assignment in Venice to come to Stroud where he will demonstrate how he works on a professional assignment complete with models
This will be a fantastic interactive opportunity to see one of the world’s great photographers demonstrating some of the latest equipment, showing his lighting secrets and giving a true insight into the inner workings of one the magicians of photography.

Arthur Sparrow
1919-2011

All members of Stroud Camera Club recently received notification that Arthur, a long-standing member of the club, had died. As a new member I cannot boast a long acquaintance with Arthur but my occasional meetings with him during club nights were enough to persuade me that he was an extremely warm-hearted man with a passion for a life: everything he did, he did with enthusiasm and when he talked about his life and his adventures, his natural kindliness and humour were clear for all to see. It was clear that Arthur, who was recently awarded honorary membership for a lifetime of service to the club, was an extremely important figure within the club — respected and loved by all.

My first experience of Arthur was his smile: I was a new member to the club, feeling a little nervous and out of my depth, but his smiling cheery face as he introduced himself to me put me completely at my ease.

I was lucky enough to be present on the wonderful occasion that Arthur talked about winning a national Kodak competition that he had entered — his prize: an amazing cruise to the Caribbean. We were treated to some delightful photographs of his island-hopping holiday and the slide show stuck in my mind, not necessarily for the photographs — interesting as they were — but for the sheer unabashed enthusiasm in the way he explained each slide. This was a man who loved life!

From time to time club members are encouraged to share their photographic skills with other members: small workstations are set up and we drift from one expert showing us how to (say) use layers in Photoshop to another explaining the intricacies of (say) flash photography. It was on one such evening quite recently that I had another ‘Arthur’ experience: his area of expertise on this particular evening (I am only now beginning to understand that Arthur had many interests and many areas of expertise) was the cutting of mount board and as this is something in which I am interested, I jumped in for a one-to-one tutorial. Although I found the necessary techniques quite difficult — in a ham-fisted sort of way — Arthur, as the teacher, was fantastic. He patiently explained what I should do, allowed me to make my mistakes, explained again and suggested I had another go.

I will miss Arthur a great deal and Stroud Camera Club will be a poorer place without him. It is in the wider community, however, that his parting will be most sadly felt and we at Stroud Camera Club send our heart-felt best wishes and condolences to Arthur’s family and friends.

Thanks for the smile, Arthur. Thanks for everything.

5.       Patrick and Lucy Guardian Masterclasses

In preparation for the autumn season, we have been working alongside legendary photographer David Montgomery to develop a series of new photography courses to suit all levels and interests.

This new focus in the programme allows us to explore the art of photography in greater depth, offer a more comprehensive and specialised range of masterclasses and work with some of the best photographers in the land. We are also extremely proud to announce two new partnerships the first with the Voewood festival and the second with the University of East Anglia.

The former will see us deliver a series of taster masterclasses as part of their inaugural summer literary festival with some of the event's most accomplished writers. The latter sees us join forces with the UK's leading university for creative writing to offer three distinct courses for serious writers at different stages of their development. All three levels with be accredited by UEA.

We hope some elements of the new programme will capture your imagination and inspire you to join us this autumn and get inside the minds of masters!

We hope to hear from you soon
